Montreal, May 8, 2008 - The Association for Solidarity among Student Unions (ASSÉ) adopted at its congress on April 26 and 27 this year a resolution to support the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israeli apartheid. This position is the culmination of the work of consultation and information campaign carried out since October 2007 in collaboration with the collective Tadamon ! The ASSÉ invites all social actors to support the campaign launched by 170 Palestinian civil society organizations. A demonstration will take place on this topic next May 10 in Montreal.

Montreal, September 4th 2007 – The struggle for free education is organising around the Association for Solidarity amongst Student Unions (ASSÉ) which is starting an unlimited general strike campain this Autumn 2007. Facing a hike in tuition fees, student unions are starting to mobilise as of the start of the semester to claim high and strong that education is a right that will not be haggled over. While the resistance is being prepared, the strike will be discussed in general assemblies as well as a proposition to organise in a coalition around the ASSÉ, similar to that of the 2005 strike, the CASSÉÉ.que la résistance se met en branle, les assemblées générales sont appelées à se prononcer sur la grève ainsi que sur une proposition d’adhésion à une coalition autour de l’ASSÉ, comme ce fut le cas avec la CASSÉÉ en 2005.

The fight for free education continues! Over six months after the historic, seven-week strike that shook Quebec last winter, students are still facing many challenges. One hundred thousand of them voted against the deal that was negociated with the government by the FECQ (Fédération étudiante collégiale du Québec) and the FEUQ (Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec), and that put and end to the strike. These students spoke out against the legitimacy of this deal and are continuing to do so today.

"Yes (tuition will go up) and the price of milk, bread, rent, mortgage, houses will go up. The issue is by how much," The declaration shocked more than one. As consultations are being held in Ontario about tuition fees and accessibility, the news stunned partisans of the current tuition freeze.

The Quebec Student financial aid program (SFA), in place to improve accessibility to post-secondary education and to provide a higher standard of life to students who are financially disadvantaged, is the object this year of a consultation campaign.
